What's next, Menopausal Barbie?

20th January 2026

We’re back to our normal schedule after taking something of a break over Christmas, so those of you who listen to our podcast should see our next episode come out next weekend. Given that we’ve skipped a couple of episodes there are quite a few articles to talk about, so it might be a long one!

Some of the topics we may cover on the podcast are in this week’s newsletter, starting with Katrina’s look into menopause supplements - something she’s been seeing more and more adverts for recently, given that social media appears to have profiled her as being a target demographic. Bronwyn has looked into all things autism, including a new season of The Telepathy Tapes, autistic Barbie and a new study looking at whether alt-med is useful for treating autism. Finally I’ve thrown together a fairly maths-heavy article looking at a relatively new aerospace company, questioning whether their business model of shining sunlight down onto earth makes any sense whatsoever. I’ve used the guesstimating skills I was taught during my engineering degree to run some rough calculations, and somehow my answers look very different to the ones the company is putting out there.

Menopause Supplements

As a woman of a 'certain age', I am finding that as I scroll through social media I am being ambushed by sponsored posts promising to “banish hot flashes for good” and “restore youthful balance with one natural pill a day” or, more recently, “balance my cortisol”. It seems I'm not alone.

Wham, Bam, Autism scams and a grand slam: Telepathy Tapes, Autistic Barbie, and a systematic review.

Wham, Bam, Autism scams and a grand slam: Telepathy Tapes, Autistic Barbie, and a systematic review.

It is with great dismay that I report that the second season of the Telepathy Tapes podcast has been released, and it's weirder than ever. Topics covered across the 11 available episodes take pseudoscience to new heights, including mediumship, animal telepathy, near-death experiences, energy healing, and plant intelligence. My scan of the transcripts indicates that while the psychic abilities of Autistic children are still discussed, Autism has largely taken a back seat to a broader exploration of fringe science involving human consciousness. As Meghan Boilard for Asterisk Mag put it,

Reflect Orbital: Engineering marvel or just smoke and mirrors?

I've been a little slow to pick up on this one, but there's a company in the US, Reflect Orbital, that is offering services based on having mirrors in space. Given that the company's previous name was Tons of Mirrors, it would seem that their aim is likely to be to imitate Elon Musk's Starlink by launching thousands of mirrors into low-earth orbit, and pointing them back at earth. One article reports that the company plans to have 4,000 satellites in orbit by 2030, with the eventual aim of launching a quarter of a million satellites.
